Brian McCarthy has spent over 35 years working in thermodynamics - designing, selling, installing, and servicing heat pumps, fresh air ventilation systems, and energy recovery solutions.
That experience taught him something simple: Systems don’t fail under average conditions. They fail when real-world behaviour doesn’t match the assumptions they were designed around.
Today, he provides an independent perspective to help organisations make better energy decisions - before significant capital is committed.

In environments like hotels and hospitals, this matters.

In one project, I was called in to review the performance of a hot water heat pump system that was sized based on average demand, with additional capacity for peak holiday periods.
On paper, it worked.
In reality, when a tour group arrived and everyone showered at the same time, the system was overwhelmed. There was no backup system to help in scenarios like this.
That experience permanently changed how I approached advising on energy system selections.
Not because the calculations were wrong - but because the assumptions didn’t fully reflect real-world behaviour.
Performance isn’t judged on averages - it’s judged at the moments that matter most.
